squid localhost

I installed Squid earlier this week to track all the http traffic.... effectively web scrapper. I stumbled on one issue that took more than 2 hours to debug...
http_access allow localhost

was needed so that my local machine traffic can be peroxided.

After the traffic started flowing, stumbled on issue that the 'dynamic' web content is not cached. While this can make sense as proxy, Squid is not usable for my use. I wish this feature was provided as charity at-least.

The data is binary - not plain text. This makes it difficult to parse easily...

I had to resort to Firefox extension slogger on firefox 2.0 (instead of the latest as of today 3.0.10). This combo did work and got my task done.

Java vs C/C++

It is interesting to note the differences between the Java vs C/C++ schools of thought. I am sure there might be pundits who might have more knowledge and stronger affinity towards either of these languages - still this is my views (ready to be corrected as needed).

Commonality:

It is interesting to note the similarities and dissimilarities of portability of C & Java programs.
Both C & Java are implemented in multiple architectures.
Both languages have big industry support, total ecology support, Application Developer community, standards organizations, training, education, books, tutorials, conferences, seminars - and religious followers
Both are available free of cost (GNU - open soruce)
Both C/C++ code and Java code supports each others calling others and be called by the other language.

C++ :

Some of C++ application domains include systems software, application software, device drivers, embedded software, high-performance server and client applications, and entertainment software such as video games.
Several groups provide both free and proprietary C++ compiler software, including the GNU Project, Microsoft, Intel, Borland and others.
C++ was developed starting in 1979 as an enhancement to the C programming language. C itself is a general purpose programing language developed in 1972. Meaning - this is available for longer time - to be mature as compared to Java.
C provides compilers for each architecture where the same source code can be recompiled as needed. java approach is to provide single compiler and have JRE for different platforms.
C some times provides cross compilers that come in handy for rare/new architectures.
This author believes there are more architectures that has C compilers than the availability of JRE.
C was designed to be compiled using a relatively straightforward compiler, to provide low-level access to memory, to provide language constructs that map efficiently to machine instructions, and to require minimal run-time support.
C was therefore useful for many applications that had formerly been coded in assembly language.

Proximity info sharing

If I tell the train/bus conductor that I need to get down at a specific stop, can the conductor wake me and ensure that I get down at the right place.

Can we replace the 'conductor' in the above example by a smart device using bluetooth technology that can talk to my cell phone with bluetooth.

Buy Home

Couple of data pointers while buying home.

Ultimately after purchasing home, will you, your spouce and family members be HAPPY. Have this as the key guidance during the entire purchase process.
I wouldn't recommend not even putting a 5% down payment.
Buying agent and selling agent take 3% each. So, asking for 94% of the asking/listing price is not irrelevant. - Or if this property is not your dream home, you SHOULD ask for less than 94% of the asking price.
Try to by pass the agents - for example, in new homes, try to deal with the seller directly.
Loans (First Mortgage and second Home Equity Line of Credit) are again products and YOU ARE the customer. So, don't hesitate to look for bargain and negotiations.
Don't ever buy more than your means. It is no win scenario gamble - especially if this is your first home where you plan on living.
Buying home on the last few days of making offer / contract is purely 'mind game'. Numbers are just numbers. Stay focused on the final target and see what makes you HAPPY.
Buying home is like buying a stock. It goes up and down. Some one thinks they want to sfel because there are other uses for that money - while the buyer thinks his money will do better in this stock.
When you are in the market, the prices are set also by the personal feelings of the buyers/sellers currently in the market. If you feel better about venturing, go for it. If not, stay back.
Make sure the reccuring income is relatively stable - not much change/impact negatively.
Have some reserve on purchase of home. You might need incidental expenses.

Do you have multiple computer and you are changing keyboard/mouse to view them? Here is the relief from Open Source software Synergy Synergy works on cross platform.

In one of my earlier projects, we have a developer write a program for Windows and named it 'pauli' (girl friend's name?). I recall the developer telling that this causes security threat - not sure if this is still existing in Synergy.

Hey, cross platform? Not a problem!! I am using this program on windows and Mac OS and it works well. From the tar ball, Linux seems to be supported as well.

Here is the list of waterfalls that might be interesting for us for the Aug 3, 2007 week end trip.

Waterfalls must be beautiful.

Better than Uvas Canyon waterfalls
Waterfalls in it’s best (/optimal) beuty during July/Aug time
Ease of reaching by car
Not much effort in hiking from the car to get a good view point to view the falls
At-least one swimming hole (webber is a possibility)
If there are other interesting view points on the way or neighboring place – that’s extra.

Looks like companies are recognizing the need to do the right thing to get more reliable juice on the existing hardware/software. Business community has started putting money where the mouth is. Check out the trend in job req in early Jan 2007 for these terminologies and yo will notice that there are job titles with one or more of these words in both Dev and QA organizations. Also, some of the big troubles bubbling up most likely due to these factors - read RIM service down or Intuit servers going down during it's peak load.

ssh - with no password

The technical terminology sees to be "public key authentication".
ssh - with no password requires the file ~/.ssh/authorized_keys contain the public key of the client stored in the ssh server.

~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub - contains the public key of the client

Why India for outsourcing

1. Indian S/W folks read/write/speak/understand English
2. Unlike Romania, India has a larger pool of talent and also the engineering institutes churn out more engineers each year. In Romania, if large enterprise like Cisco (Already done) goes and recruits 500 s/w professionals, smaller companies will not get any one...
3. Weather in India is favorable as compared to many countries (No snow in most places - year round)
4. India is a nice place to visit (for ages!! haha. It is considered a place to visit if possible)
5. With more NRI returning, the Indians at large now understand the expectations from international companies.

language dependancy of good tools

There are not many good reasons to nail these good/powerful tools to specific languages and restrict it's wide spread usage. On the other hand, nailing them to language gives the marketing muscle to tag on to existing bandwagon. Both products (Ruby/Watir - Expect/tcl) get cross promotion benefits. From a person who don't know both, it is additional thing to learn - instead of reusing sh and perl...

ssh tunnelling

On the receiving server edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. Replace AllowTcpForwarding yes. restart sshd (or reboot) for this setting to take effect.

On the receiving server say
ssh -L:localhost: @ -N

On the sourcing/originating/'client' machine say
sh -L:localhost: @ -N

Now you can use any tool on the 'client' machine as though the server is running locally - only caution is to know that you have to use the credentials of the remote machine as needed. For example, if you want to use MySQL query browser on the client, you have to give the credential of the username of the machine on which the MySQL server is running. This will be the machines account - not mysql account.

Alviso

Ghost towns in the bay area:
Drawbridge, California (Near Alviso) and
Holy City, California (on HW 17)

Alviso north of 237 is a old Mexican town. Many homes & establishments are old and having Mexican flavor all over. There is a train track and the trains go on them ones a day or so (actively used).
The southern part of Alviso is modern and have newer companies like other areas in the south bay. Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek flood here... Last big flood was in 1983. The levee has been strengthened since.

Alviso is currently part of SJ (not too sure).
An electric generator came to the town during the fall of Gov Davis - California energy crisis.

The property was owned by an old short lady who died recently.

watir good and bad

Ruby : What I liked
1. installed just fine on my Windows XP machine
2. It has interactive command-line interpreter and compile version (interpreter excellent for quick and dirty jobs as well as prototyping - where compile is considered extra step..)
3. Ruby is new and hot - there seems to be more momentum (Folks looking for the next big thing - after java)
4. Ruby seems to be small foot print and can be compiled on many platforms - portability
5. Ruby implements package management, RubyGems, to distribute components efficiently.
6. Ruby Application Archive (RAA) and RubyForge are repository focused on Ruby.
7. 'Ruby on Rails' is application framework
8. rake is the ruby build system available on rubyforge

Watir:
1. SilkTest and WinRunner rule the webUI funcitonal/regression testing/automation arena - for good reason. They both do a good job at what they claim.
2. The price is on the higher end for people who look for open source as their default search. Evaluation copy/free copy is not easy to get for small/'not so serious' players.
3. Available only for Windows and I belive only for IE.
4. Now comes the Watir, a framework running on Ruby.
5. Tried installing it and it went smooth.
6. Tried the google example - went very smooth
7. Tried Hotmail login that uses cross domain cookies - it just wouldn't work
8. Checking the forums - looks like if IE complains, Watir will complain too. But, this statement don't look right to me as IE don't actually complain (even though it is doing things that IE might not like...)
9. Willing to risk using Watir expecting it to mature eventually.

Open Source/Collaborative Projects

Trevor Harmon saw my reponse to a comment concerning “candidate-centered” HR-XML and the various related open source and collaborative initiatives leveraging HR-XML.

Trevor tells me that a new release of “HR-XSL” is available. “HR-XSL is a Source Forge project providing a set of command-line tools that transform a curriculum vitae or résumé in XML format into PDF, HTML, or plain text format.

The HR-XSL Source Forge site also provides a list of related open source projects. Combining that list with a few open source or collaborative efforts of which I’m aware, I’ve come up the list below, which will be maintained in HR-XML’s members wiki.

Invisalign SQA activities

Invisalign is invisible way of straightening teeth. The company behind it is AlignTech in SantaClara. The competitor (claimed as patent infringe) is OrthoClear is based in SFO and manufacturing in Pakistan. AlighTech has requested for stopping the import.
The web sites for these 2 companies are similar looking. The doctor/orthodontist certification program is looking identical. Ormco is another competing company.

ClinCheck - Electronic manufacture of invisiallign. Custom made - more than 20,000,000. This is considered as mass manufacturing of custom made item in any category.

Few HR providers for AlignTech collected from the job boards are ATR International and Xoriant. There is a SQA Manager position available with this company but there is a goof up in the web page, where it is not indexed - getting less visibility to this opening.

Cecilia Claudio, CIO and vice president of engineering for Align Technology, a Santa Clara maker of orthodontic products, and a board member of RampRate LLC, an IT outsourcing advisor in Santa Monica, Calif seems to have promoted the outsourcing effort per infoworld. AlighTech got a new CIO who started as of 12/12/05 (from google finance).

2006 US-Iran war? Isral-Lebanon

Israel attacking Iran supported Hezbollah in Lebanon. US does not say harsh words on Israel’s action - indicating that it is approved personally by Bush.

Rice has quoted "We're also taking about a durable way to end the violence" - meaning Rice is supporting the current aggression against Lebanon (similar to US invading Iraq - on pre-emptive strike). The 2 soldier kidnapping appears to be the excuse for going ahead with the large scale operation - with many causalities.

American hypocrisy

Americans is calling for sunnies and sheiads to come together - while American's deny talking to other peer geo political entities like Iran and North Korea.
Americans asking other countries not to perform nuclear test - due to safety reason - while Americans are the only geo political entity who has used atomic bomb against humans.
Americans are working on technologies that kill and harm more humans than any other nation. (read - bunker busters, smart bombs).
Americans claim to be transparent democracy. I don't know what's democracy. Democracy is one of the most cleverly used word in the 21st century in a disadvantage to the poorer country by richer countries.
American want Chinese currency to be adjusted - while they never cared when American's buying power against many poor nations were climbing for decades.

Bill Gates Resigns

1. Bill gates has announced that he would be transitioning his role as Chief Architect of Microsoft.
Ray Ozzie would take on Chief Software Architect.

Here is a first cut
1. Bill G is working hard every day every hour for Microsoft. His rate of return for his direct contribution into Microsoft has decreased over the past few years. So, BillG is better off if he don't have to work as hard for the small returns he gets as Microsoft employee. (Well different unconventional perspective). In the present arrangement, he still will be chairman of the Board of directors and take on Advisory role. In his remarks he said "I see myself always being the largest shareholder of Microsoft. I'm proud of that" http://www.microsoft.com/billgates/speeches/2006/06-15transition.asp BillG helping Microsoft in Chairman/Advisor would be to preserve his wealth and also, he can get product his dreams come true (not a thing that an average employee with smaller brain can think off).
2. At the current stage in his life and his current wealth, BillG is going for the next best bet to make the most impact - can't blame him for this smart guy. As philanthropist, he can make a long lasting impact on human kind - so that he is remembered 200 years from he is gone. These are some of the thought process of wealthiest people (read as Kings) in the world - who build Taj Mahal besides other big things.
3. From the article pointed above, Bill seems to have planned this in 2004 with his wife Melinda. Bill has also shared it with the CEO - Steve Blamer. Don't know if it is timing - Microsoft paid out one time dividend - a substantive sum - much more than impact of IRS and the US government’s tax returns program that was going on at that time. Guess, who profited the most - BillG who got a huge dividend of USD 3B, that he transferred in to his foundation (read his new company). Now comes question to SEC (Securities and Excahnges Commission).... If an ‘employee’ is planning on resigning - he siphons out a large sum from the company in to his new company (non-profit organization) - is it not looking more like Enron's deal – even though it is as dividend? Remember BillG is ultra smart - unbelievably smart. He is ruthless in business - will do any thing to get what he wants... Well, I wish some one spots this direction of thinking and do what's in best interest to prevent such rich folks from making decisions to pocket big money right before quieting the company...
4. All this said, I still like BillG as a philanthropist and as one of the smartest guy in my time and wish him well.

Adding to the story is Waren Buffet donates his money to Bill after Bill joins Waren's company in the board. Also, the donation is conditional upon Bill and Milinda being healthy and actively working on the foundation. Looks like a big time scandle to evade tax at the expense of all other tax payers. Also, at the same time accomplish what these individual wants to accomplish (in the name of charity).
