Sun to Buy StorageTek for $4.1 Billion

Gordon Haff, an analyst at the research firm Illuminata, said acquiring StorageTek would distance Sun from its past and make the company more closely resemble its archrivals Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp.
It is getting clear who are the competitors for Sun Microsystems.
HP & IBM.
I am woundering if it was Microsoft's startegy wo settle with Sun so that Sun battles with IBM - hence leaving Windows to get a greater win - long term.
