Instead of keeping excess equity in your home, you can put it to use.

Candidate looking for QA posiiton.... While I can't guarentee placement at this point, I can add value to the candidate in terms of increasing the morale to face the interview. preparation before H1B arrives
Have you started scanning the potential employers, positions, pay? Have you decided on your expected salary from your emploer? The H1B docs may say a number - the actual salary negotiated will most likely be different. You have some more home work to do.... Sorry, I keep giving you more and more work - hey it is better to get a head start instead of getting surprises - when actual event occurs.
We are in Aug right now. The H1B for 2006 opens in October 1st. 2005 for ~65,000 visa approvals. I guess your papers can make it to the 2006 quota fine. I want to see that you are getting placed in the project before the Thanks Giving holidays. If we miss that, we risk the placement dragging until Jan 2nd week (after all the holiday season - Thanks Giving, Christmas, New Year). So, we have to be prepared in every possible way by October 2005.
Until October, plan on spending 3-6 hours every working day to be working on technology stuff. This will get you prepared for the upcomming interviews. How is your multiple resume going on?

resume tips
Resume is not static and not unique - especially in the consulting business - as consultant. I know it is hard to digest initially. What ever changes that are suggested, try to make it - except I am not too much in favor of out right lies. That said, I always suggested folks to tweak the resume to match the needs of the client. This might mean, shorter resume or looonger resume. Some times you have to remove some projects or areas of expertise in order to make room or highlight other skills that are of interest to the client. You got to make your marketing manager happy to market your skills. Absence of that would make the marketing manger not focus on your resume - which potentially could hurt your prospects in short term.
One of the item that I would recommend removing in your resume is the reference to DOS. I have not had any one convince me that writing DOS in the resume would benefit in getting hired. I have had many people, including myself, feel that writing DOS lowers the level of competence in the candidate. I am not claiming that what I feel/think is correct - however, I put the ownes on you to prove to yourself that writing DOS in your resume adds the value of your resume.
Try to write couple of resumes. I have had more than 5 resumes at any time - when I am actively interviewing. I know my skills are diverse that forces me to have few resumes focusing on couple of selected areas and few that has wide areas coverage. Few small (2 pages - I have not been able to write one page yet..) and few long - 4-5 pages.
Try loading bunch of free ware packages and try them out - you can add in your resume that you have familiarity. Try to contribute code to free ware, if you have chance. This will make it easy to get hired - if some one is looking for such skills. If you can have Linux at home - more free wares work effectively on Linux.
Few areas of recommendation in open source:
1. My SQL - installation and try to use for any of your Database (ODBC/JDBC) projects
2. Apache - administration
3. Perl/PHP/Python
4. FireFox - browser
5. JBoss
6. TomCat
If you want to get in to Release Engineering role there are bunch of areas you can brush up
1. Shell programming - wizard level
2. Make System
3. Apache ANT
4. Mozilla Bonsai/TinderBox(?)
If you want to focus on Test Lead (QA)
1. Learn Bugzilla - install/administer
2. Test Case management systems - Bugzilla Test Runner
Getting Developer Lead role is slightly tricky and the number of openings are few. Of-course the $$ is good/high in that role. In order to get a quick break, I would suggest to focus on individual contributor role - that are inherently more available than managerial roles. With India/China outsourcing in it's peak growth, couple of my friends are telling me that lead roles to manage the India/China team is in demand in the US. I don't know if this is correct - but, sounds logical enough to believe. Even Google and Microsoft are fighting on people resource for getting right candidate for leading the teams...

shasta trip
SHORT HIKES (15-45 minutes)
John Everitt Vista Point
Walk through large, old growth conifer forest to volcanic rock outcropping with panorama of area south to McCloud and Sacramento River Canyons. Look for botanical tree signs.
Time: 20 minutes Length: 1/2 mile RT Elevation: 5000' to 5100'
Difficulty: Easy. Climbs then levels to easy grade.
Trailhead: 9 miles up Everitt Memorial Hwy. to parking lot.

The John Everitt Vista Point is named after a firefighter. John used to be an avid protector of the natural resources on Mt. Shasta. John died a short distance away from where the current vista point is located. In fact there is a small monument to him, which marks the exact spot where he died. There are parking and restrooms located here as well. The views of Mt. Shasta and of Strawberry valley are incredible. There are several hiking trails in the area. Two areas that come to mind are the trails at Bunny Flats, and the trails at Panther Meadows. Either location are only minutes drive from the Vista Point.
To get to the Vista Point take the central Mt. Shasta turnoff from Interstate 5 and drive east on Lake Street through the stop lights, to the top of the hill. Lake Street will eventually bend and become the Everitt Memorial Highway. The Vista Point is only 6 miles up the road. This road is almost all uphill to the Vista Point.
Panther Meadow Loop
Spring water flows in rivulets through fragile alpine meadow full of wildflowers. Peaceful loop trail allows great view of mountain. Sensitive plantlike; please stay on trail. No drinking water. Note: Only accessible after snow melts, typically June 1.
Time: 45 minutes Length: 1.5 miles RT Elevation: 7500' to 7900'
Difficulty: Easy. Rocky path is well-marked.
Trailhead: 12.5 miles up Everitt Memorial Hwy. to marked trailhead.

Unlike in traditional countries where people are selected for their pure personal merit/skills, here, you have to be liked by the manager and the interview team members. How to make some one to like you is very difficult area. In many cases, if you liked the interview, mostly you will be selected. If you did not like the interview, most likely the manager/interviewer also did not like talking to you - so not selected. You got to make the interviewer interested in your skills and also should be comfortable working with you.
Anyway, you got to be happy at the end of the day. A revenue stream is a part of securing happiness - not everything.

When I was passing by a manger in the coffee room and mentioned these 3 parameters, the manager was really surprised that the parameters available to tweak are just 3 - not more - not less....
We can nail only 2 of these parameters - the third one always floats - else the project has the higher risk of failing.

Google Maps is picking up steam these days - after the acquisition of KeyHole last year. The maps are given as APIs as well.
Question would be the copy right protection that Google claims on these pictures. Basically many of these raw data could be from NASA or from Government sources. It would be interesting to know if Google can claim copyright when it has copied for free from the US tax dollars.

Microsoft and Bill Gates seems to be concerned that he is not able to provide the environment that's required to retain the best in the industry. So, it has gone the extra mile to be on the other end of the legal suit.

Harry Potter pre release issues (1)
New 'Harry Potter' book leaked

Raincoast Books, the Canadian publisher of the Harry Potter series, is in full damage-control mode after a B.C. store prematurely sold up to 15 copies of the latest book last week.
Raincoast heard about the gaffe on Friday, the day after the books were sold at the Great Canadian Superstore in Coquitlam – more than a week before the July 16 official release.
On Saturday, the B.C. Supreme Court granted Raincoast a court injunction to help get the books back, and keep a lid on the plot.

Company spokesperson Jamie Broadhurst says some of the purchasers have voluntarily returned their copies. And he says the company is offering a reward to get the others returned.
"We're asking them to contact us and to temporarily return their copies of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to us," he says.
"And in exchange, what we will do, is on July 16 at one minute past midnight, we will return their copies to them along with a signed autographed bookplate to be affixed in their book from J.K. Rowling, and some gift items as well."
The injunction also bars anyone from leaking the plot of the latest Harry Potter book before 12:01 a.m. this Saturday.
The injunction exempts the book's official public relations campaign.
This latest incident is similar to one in 2003 when a Wal-Mart in Quebec accidentally sold a few copies of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix before the release date.

Author J.K. Rowling's tales of an orphaned wizard-in-training have sold more than 200 million copies around the world.

Crater Lake travel
Started out on July 2nd, 2005 at 7:00am from San Jose. Stop over for quick stop in a town on Interstate 5 Filled gas. Next stop at Yeraka for gas. There was no county park or any picnic table in this whole town... Had to stop in the JcPenny parking and have our lunch.
Next exi,t was at Medford.
The highways numbered with the milestone. I5, 66, 99 & 138 are real milesotones.

Take the Crater Lake entrance. First spot was un notch. The hike was kind of steep short though. The view was worth it.

For years, Dennis Strigl, the chief executive and president of Verizon Wireless, enjoyed the enviable position of running the largest player in the wireless industry. But last October, Cingular Wireless took over the top spot when it closed its $41 billion acquisition of AT&T Wireless Services. Cingular has used its newfound prominence to get exclusive access to hot new phones, including Motorola's (MOT ) Razr.

Now, Strigl is playing an aggressive game of catch-up. Verizon is a close No. 2 and is gaining ground on Cingular by more quickly adding new subscribers. Last year, Verizon Wireless increased its sales an astounding 23%, to $27.6 billion, with net income surging 52%, to $1.6 billion. That's higher growth than Cisco (CSCO ), Microsoft (MSFT ), Intel (INTC ), or Dell (DELL ).
Under Strigl, the company has gained a reputation for operational excellence, too. Its churn rate, a closely watched metric measuring the average monthly percentage of customers who leave in a given quarter, ended 2004 with an industry best rate of 1.5%, down from 1.8% in 2003.
This year, operations continue to plug ahead at an impressive clip. In the first quarter of 2005, Verizon Wireless posted 20.4% sales growth, adding 1.64 million new customers, while its churn rate dipped to 1.33% -- a new low. By contrast, Cingular increased its sales 5.3%, adding 1.4 million new subscribers, while its churn rate fell to 2.2% from 2.4%.
BusinessWeek Computers Editor Spencer E. Ante recently sat down with Strigl to talk about Verizon Wireless' strategy, competition, and promising new ventures, such as a forthcoming music service for cell phones. Here are the edited excerpts from their conversation:
Q: There's plenty of consolidation in the wireless industry. Cingular buying AT&T Wireless. Nextel and Sprint merging. Will Verizon Wireless continue to go it alone?
A: While others are merging, our goal is to take market share. We were successful last year and in the first quarter of 2005. We were first to market with our data strategy with our V CAST [TV on mobile-phone service]. We intend to take advantage of it. We figure we've still got a good one-year lead on this market.
Q: Is Sprint's competing TV service, MobiTV, a threat?
A: It's just a slower product. We've still got a technical advantage. Our service transmits data at 400 to 700 kilobits per second. Sprint's rate is 60 to 80 kilobits per second.
Q: What are your plans for capital spending?
A: You have to continue to invest in the network. We will spend $5.5 billion on capital expenditures in 2005. We will spend $500 million on our EVDO network [Evolution Data Optimized, Verizon's high-speed wireless network for video and other data services]. The rest will go toward filling out our [coverage] footprint and upgrading capacity.
Q: What new services are you working on?
A: We want to get into music. I think we'll be a very viable competitor to iPod and other players. This will be the next major focus of the [wireless] carriers.
We also want to penetrate the business marketplace with wireless broadband. We've got more to do there. About 6.3% of our sales come from data revenue, while Sprint gets 9% of its sales from data. Data can become 25% of our revenues in the next six to seven years.
Q: When will you launch a music service?
A: We will do our best to introduce a product by the holiday season.
Q: What's the most challenging aspect to the music venture?
A: The hardest part is working with the manufacturers. Cost and pricing issues are difficult. We haven't announced an agreement with a manufacturer yet.
Q: Cingular, with its acquisition of AT&T, is the biggest wireless company. What's your advantage over Cingular?
A: Network reliability. It's not something Cingular can replicate overnight. We probably have a three-year lead on network [reliability]. As long as we continue to invest, you can't catch up. Our second advantage is distribution. We're putting stores in the right locations -- 65% of our new customers come from Verizon stores.
Q: Will you surpass Cingular in total subscribers?
A: The difference now is about 4.5 million subscribers. It's 45.5 million to Cingular's 50 million. I would like to wake up one morning and see we've surpassed them. But our goal is to be the best network operator. Biggest comes second. We're a much lower-cost operator.
Q: What types of acquisitions are you considering?
A: We did $5 billion in deals last year. [Verizon Wireless made many acquisitions to obtain wireless spectrum rights, including a $930 million purchase from NextWave Telecom for licenses in the New York area.] But we have no burning need to make another acquisition. We have spectrum that will serve us well for years to come.

Grade night out
My wife and I decided to take our daughter for her outstanding performance in her academics for the year 2005. This also coincided with me trying to start appreciating others success. I am too trying to make progress...
My wife was mentioning about how Kinko's began in a humble way. One great thing of winners is that they all share a passion to be some one irrespective of their skills/abilities.

Fathers day 2005 special
Fathers day 2005 is a special day - 6/19/2005.
My wife and daughter planned to surprise me with a pot luck party - in the disguise of my friend's birthday. We were 4 families and we had lunch and play in the neighborhood park.
My 14 year old daughter baked a nice Vanilla cake with Chocolate icing on top. That was wonderful for a first timer. Most of our friends enjoyed it.
Wife made Bhadam Halwa - that's one of my most favorite one.
Shared with my friends of the possibility of personal lending. I know none of them had lots of money to share. This gave me courage to ask for money - starting point for my guts building that I keep saying that I lacked. Let's see how I make progress...

fremont older hike - again
Today again I went to the Fremont older trail. Start at 9:04 and reach back by around 10:20. I guess I am able to do it quicker - may be I am getting healthier!!
Noticed a small squirile. The color is more dirty dunk color than the grey color of the adult. Saw the pointed feathere on head birds who normally walk - 2 or three of them.
Noticed a lump of bird feather - meaning a hunter around.
A white (pure white) spherical flower ready to release it's seads to fly off - many of them around.
The hay is very dry now. The popping sound of the seads is no more present. Can you imagine few of the hay are more than 5 feet tall and yet less than 1/8 of an inch in diameter?
At the parking lot on the return - 2 surprises. The birds have had their act on the rear of my car. There was a snake (less than 18 inches long) beaten to death and cut in to half by the most brillient mamal on the planet - human...

Dindigul is an administrative district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The district headquarters
are located at Dindigul. History of Dindigul Dindigulis one of the historical cities in Tamilnadu. It
plays a significant rolein promotion of trade, as a vital trade centre to cater the needs of nearbyvillages. A Fort over a small
hill, the three hundred and sixty year oldmonument stands gallantly in the west,and this fort stands as a land mark.
Dindigulwas famous during the seventh century it self. "Appar" the great poet hadvisited the city. Thus the city had been noted
in "Thevaram". Dindigulwas mentioned in the book "Padmagiri Nadhar Thenral Vidu thudhu" writtenby the poet "Palupatai
sokkanathar" as Padmagiri. This was later statedby OO.Ve Saminatha Iyer in his foreward to the above book. He also addedthat
Dindigul was called as Dindeecharam.
Dindigulregion was the border of the three great Kingdoms of South
India, the Pandiyas,the cheras and the Cholas. Hence
Dindigul has its set back in its growthby successive wars among the
three. In the ancient time the cheran kingDharmabalan has
built temples for Abirami ambigai and Padmagirinathar.After that in the
book Silapthigaram it is mentioned as the Northern
borderof the Pandaya Kingdom whose capital was Madurai. Historian
"Strabo" hadalso written in 20 A.D. The Roman Emperor "Augustus
Ceaser" has sent ateam to the pandya kingdom in 73 A.D., Pillni the
great historian of thetime has described about the Pandya
king in his works we have more proofsthat Pandya kingdom was
established before the Christian era.
Inthe first century of the Christian era the Chola king named Karikal Cholanhad captured the Pandya kingdom hence Dindigul has
been ruled by both Cholasand Pandyan with the change of time. In the sixth century the pallava'stook over Southern India, they
were in the power until twelth century.Dindugul has been under the rule of Pallavas untill Cholas regained thestate in the
Thirteenth century. In the fourteenth century Southern Indiawas invaded by the Moguls. The Vijaya Nagar rulers restricted their
entryinto the part for the time being. Dindigul was safe in the hands of VijayaNagara before cheras take over the Pandya kingdom
Chandrakumara Pandyanwon the war against cheras with the assitance provided The Vijaya NagarKingdom. The commander of the vijaya
Nagar army Kambanna udayar playedan important role in the war.
Everyhistorical city in India have a good number of temples, reflecting cultureand prosperity of the people. In the fourteenth
century KalahastheeswaraGnanambika temple was built. The seenivasaperumal temple built in the bottomof the hill was eroded by
time. By the 16th century Pandyan acquired thewhole chera kingdom with the support of Vijayanagar king
Sachudevarayer.Sachudevarayer, on his visit in 1538 A.D. ordered for the repair worksand Garnish the temple of Abirami amman
& Padmagirinathar. This isinferred from the script written over stone in the Fort temple.
In1559 Nayakkars became powerful, their territory ended with Dindigul inthe north. The ruler, Viswanatha Nayakkar wanted to
secure the bordersof the pandya kingdom. Unfortunated he died in 1563. After his death MuthukrisnaNayakka became the king of
pandaya kingdom in 1602 A.D. He built the stronghill tort in 1605 A.D. secure Dindigul from invasion. He also built a fortat the
bottom at the bottom of the hill. This was later called "Pettaiwall" The East gate of the fort was near the American mission
compound.the North gate was at the junction of palani & vedasenthur roads thesouth gate was at the junction of Palani &
Vedasenthur roads. The southgate was adjacent to the Begampoor Mosque.
MuthuveerappaNayakkar and Thirumalai Nayakkar followed Muthukrishna
Nayakkar. Dindigulgot its significance during Nayakkars rule
of Madurai. Thirumalai Nayakkarredressed the Hill tort. He built the
Front hall of the Kalahastheeswaraswamy temple. Sowndaraja
Perumal temple in Phadikombu was erected. Duringhis Nayakkars stay in
Dindigul, he fell into sickness, he prayed Sree
Rangaperumalbut his sickness remained with him. Madurai Meenakshiamman
came in hisdream and ordered him to rule over with Madurai
as his capital. He didso and got himself relived from his sickness. His
successords did not farewell. They died soon. This made
Rani Mangammal became the ruler of theregion. She ruled ingenusly. She
built the six hundred steps for the hillfort.
In1736 Sanda Saheb Seized power from Vangaru Nayakkar. Hence, Dindigul
cameunder his regin. In 1742 Mysore army under the
leadership of Venkatarayerconquered Dindigul. He governed Dindigul as a
representative of Maharajaof Mysore. He built the Chatram
(a macting place for the civils) in thewest car street. By then the
street is called as chatram street. Therewere Eighteen
Palayams (a small region consists of few villages) duringhis reign.
They were 1. Kandamanayakkanur 2. Thevaram 3. Bodi
Nayakkanur4. Erasakka Nayakkanur 5. Pilliappa Nayakkanur 6. Nilakottai
7. Virupatchi8. Kannivadi 9. Marunuthu 10. Thottaian
Kottai 11. Emakalapuram 12. Ambathurai13. Ammayanakkanur 14.
Tharasimadai 15. Edayakottai 16. Sholavandan 17.Kombai 18.
Sandhaiyur. Now these palayams present under Dindigul taluk,Periyakulam
taluk, Palani taluk, Nilakottai taluk & Thirumangalam
taluk.At old times all these palayams were under Dindigul Semai with
Dindigulas capital. These palayams refused to pay respect to
venkatarayer. So in1748 A.D. Venkatappa was made governer of the region
after the dismissalof Venkatarayer. Even this leadership
failed.
In1755 Mysore Maharaja sent Haider Ali to Dindigul. He handled the Situationin an adept manner and captured Sholavandan alos.
Later Haider Ali becamethe Maharaja of Mysore. In 1765 Haider Ali went back to Mysore. In 1777he appointed Purshana Mirsaheb as
governor of Dindigul. He strengthenedthe fort and made few changes. One among them is the construction of presentgate and he
ordered to close the East Gate. His wife Ameer-um-Nisha-Begamdied during delivery. Her tomb is now called Begambur.
In1783 British army, lead by captain long Dindigul. In 1784 after an agreementbetween the Mysore province and British army.
Dindigul was restored byMysore province. In 1788 Thippusultan, Son of Haider Ali was crowned asKing of Dindigul. He ordered to
broguht docon the statues of padmagirinathar& Abiramiambigai from the hill temples to the Kalahastheeswara Swamytemple.
In 1790 Tames stewart gained control over Dindigul by invading it in the secondwar of Mysore. In a pact made on 1792
Thippusulthan give back Dindigulto the English. Dindigul is the first region to come under English rulein the Madurai District.
In 1798 the British army Strengthened the hillfortwith cannons, and by building sentinal rooms in every corner.
TheBritish army, under statten stayed at Dindigul fort from 1798 to
1859.After that Madurai was made head quarters of the British
army and Dindigulwas attached to it as a taluik, In 1866, 11th November
Dindigul becamea Municipality. The city got its railway
station in 1875 when rail linefor Trichy to Tuticorin was constructed.
Dindigul given to British in 1792was under the rule of the
British. Untill we got our Independence on 15thAugust 1947.
The Great sri Ramanamaharishi who born in Dindigul and studied in Nehruji memorial school upto 7th std before he moves to
thiruvannamalai.
Dindigul is an interior region of Tamilnadu. Dindigul lies on the banks of Kudavanar river with a total landscape of 6058
sqkm. Inspite of its geographical location there are about 110 tanneries both registered and non-registered in and around
Dindigul. This district is well known for the making of locks. The Dindigul district is divided into 7 taluks namely, Dindigul
taluk, Natham taluk, Kodaikanal taluk, Nilakkottai taluk, Palani taluk,Oddanch atram taluk & Vedasandur taluk.
Sri Kottai Mariamman Koil: Itis more than 200 years old. The Mariamman
idol is said to be installedby the army men of Tippu
Sultan at the fort of the mountain. Hence it iscalled Kottai (Fort)
Mariamman temple fo Dindigul. The temple is constructedin the
shape of a square. There is a temple for Vetri Vinayaka at the
South& Lord Muruga at the North of this temple. There is a
Mandapam (Hall)in the centre of the ground in which there is a
sculpture of a Lion facingthe Sannidhi. The Sanctum Sanctorum is
small & square shaped. The deityconsecrated (Moolavar) is seen
here, embedded deeply under the floor.
Thereare several sculpture on the sniper structure over the Sanctum
Sanctorum,depicting various incarnations of the goddess
Mariamman. All the four sides,various seenes showing the destroying of
monster by the goddess are seen.On the eastern side over
the Amman Sannidhi is a temple for Vinayaka, andon western side a
temple for Madurai Veeran. On the front side of Sannidhithe
Navagraha idols are installed. On the back side of the temple, thereis
an idol of Kaalhi & another one for Dhurga. The temple
is situatedin such a large are a as 2 acres (8,000 m²). The golden
shield will adorm the deityon every day between 5 PM to 9 PM.
The temple is run by a board of Trustees.
Festivals:
Startingon the 5th day after the New Moon day, the great festival of
Masi is celebratedfor 10 days every year . There are other
festivals in all the 12 monthsof the year. The devotees come here &
worship to get rid of severaldiseases like eye disease,
small Pox etc and get cured .Larger & largercrowds are attracted to
this temple every year. The devotees perform
severalduties like taking Agni Chatti (Fire Pot), Milk Pot, Mulzaippari
procession,Maavu Vilakku etc. Nearly 10 lakh people visit
the temple during the festivedays.
Sri Kaalakatheeswarar Temple:
Eventhough the temple is very old, it came into lime light during the periodof Thirumalai. Naicker who renovated several
temples in and around Maduraigod Kaalakatheeswarar and goddess Gnanambika are the presiding deitieshere. It was a practice to
bring the idols of Abhirama Devi & PadmagiriNagar from above mountain to this temple & Celebrate the Festival
ofBrahmasaram in the month of Chitrai. The Mandapam used for this purposehas been later emballished and the deities
Kalakatheewarar & Gnanambikaiwere installed & consecrated during the 14th century.There will bePoojas for all the 5
timings in the temple. Other regular religious eventsare arranged as a routine.
St. Antony's Church:
ThisChurch was constructed by Thomas Fernando during the period 1982-1989.The important Ceremony of this temple will start on
last Friday of Januaryand will continue for 15 days.

The 200+ years old temple buit in the foot of the hill (fort) is in praise of the Hindu
deity Amman. The hindu temple was built with the Tippu Sultan's (Muslim ruler) army. The
temple is square shapped. It has 4 deities. Lord Ganesh on the south, His brother Lord Muruga in North. West has Madurai Veeran
and the East has Lord Ganesh. There is a Mandapam (Hall) in the centre of the ground in which there is a sculpture of a Lion
facing the Sannidhi. The Sanctum Sanctorum is small & square shaped. The deity consecrated (Moolavar) is seen here, embedded
deeply under the floor.

Navarathri Kolu is the best season to be in Abirmi temple. There will be 100,000 Archana. The tamil month Adi, Friday the Goddes
will be taken on a procession decorated with flowers.

China Won't Protect IP Until It Gets Its Own IT

Wang Jingchuan, China's top intellectual-property official, confessed to an audience at the FORTUNE Global Forum last month that he was under a lot of pressure in his "very challenging job." As if to illustrate his point, fellow panelist Dan Glickman, the former Congressman who now heads the Motion Picture Association of America, immediately complained that 95% of the DVDs and other recorded entertainment sold in China are pirated, the highest rate in the world. And guess what Wang pointed to as a sign of progress: The central government is clamping down on the use of pirated software—in central government offices.
While intellectual-property protection in China remains weak, experts say they can see how the problem will be solved: when China has its own IP to protect. Says Paul Gewirtz, who heads the China Law Center at Yale Law School: "The pressure thus far has come from foreign companies, but the Chinese won't find the political will until domestic enterprises have their own reasons to want stronger enforcement."
David Frazee, an IP lawyer with Greenberg Traurig in Palo Alto who was on the same panel in Beijing, already detects increased enforcement in software, semiconductors, and telecom equipment—businesses in which Chinese research and development spending is rising rapidly. "And I guarantee you'll see movement for trademarks like the rings for the Beijing Olympics in 2008," he says, "because that's where the money is for them."
Some Western companies operating in China are starting to add a new element to their IP-protection strategy: local industrial development. Philips, the Dutch electronics company, helped three Chinese universities start programs to train experts in intellectual property. But Microsoft, which may be losing more sales in China to illegal copying than any other company, has gone even further. It is helping China build a local software industry. One example: It conceived, co-financed, and helps run a company in Shanghai called Wicresoft, which provides customer support in multiple languages for Chinese software companies operating internationally. "Now the top people in the country bring IP issues up to me, instead of the other way around," says Craig Mundie, Microsoft's senior vice president for policy, who has traveled to China regularly for five years.
The most notable improvement in IP protection so far has been in the attitude of China's leaders. Yale's Gewirtz is impressed that IP commissioner Wang would appear publicly next to outspoken critic Glickman. Some IP laws were recently tightened, and enforcement is improving: Three counterfeiters were recently sent to jail for copying a Philips light bulb.
But even optimists caution that China—where according to some estimates as much as one-third of the economy is dependent on counterfeit goods—has reasons to go slowly on IP protection. "This is sort of the opiate of the masses," says lawyer Frazee. "Giving people in China near-free or supercheap DVDs, music, and designer clothing is a good way of convincing them there is economic progress." Adds Microsoft's Mundie: "It will be some years before there is hard-core progress."

Sun Solaris - opens source code

C Compiler
I spoke to one of my relative in developing country who has a computer and Internet at home. He is going for C/C++ training but no compiler at home to practice. I know Linux will make things very very easy. I am not sure if I can convince my relative to switch his 'only computer' to Linux. That wouldn't be fair as i don't have exclusive Linux machine at home or work. So, I did a quick search of the stuff available on the internet and found this tool that should fit his current needs. The license also suits him as this can be used for free in non-commercial environment - as a student.

Here is the place where you can download the bits.
Actual binary Location on the ftp server
Here is an alternate location to download. Fill out name and email (no validation is done and I don't expect spams to follow - so you should be ok even if you give a temporary info here).
The binary is almost 5 MB. Expect it to take a while if your internet is slow.
Once downloaded, open this file - accept to execute it as Windows might complain of security risk.
Accept all defaults during installation. I selected a different install directory in stead of c:\lcc. I selected the directory c:\myname\lcc. c:\myname\ is the location where I download many of my programs from internet.
After extracting the file, the program will automatically configure/compile some pieces. The exit criteria is very clear - so, don't worry about that.
One concern/pitfall is that your compiler is not set in the path. So, you have to set the path or you have to use absolute/relative path to run the compiler.
Here are the steps I followed.
Take a DOS command window (The old white characters on black window). My daughter hates this window and complains of headache when ever I open this window.
To open dos command windows, on the desktop go to Start->Run on the opened window type cmd and press enter or click OK.
assuming you installed at c:\myname\lcc
type cd c:\myname\lcc\projects
type mkdir hello
type cd hello
type notepad hello.c - you should see a text editor (notepad) open
Enter the following text in the text editor and save it
#include
int main()
{
printf("My Name\n");
}

Now it is time to compile your first program.

if you did every thing fine, you should see the compiler return to the prompt with no messages.
you can ignore .exe part in lc.exe and dos would be fine.
Instead of relative path you can use absolute path like "c:\myname\lcc\bin\lc hello.c
You should include .c in hello.c program.

The download is too heavy, especially on low speed internet.
You can't save the download to replicate in another place or archive.
If you want to share the executable to a friend or another computer, you got to remember to take the corresponding cygwin's dll as well.
I plan to write a similar page for Java as well. Stay tuned.
You are currently missing the IDE GUI (Integrated Development Environment). I will search around for a IDE.
If this is critical and urgent you can look for the following
TextPad - a cool text editor. you will be prompted to buy very often. It is OK if you don't buy it (hopefully for ever).
JCreator - IDE for Java - you can use this as colorful editor.

Why refinance (Home)?
Here are the reasons I foresee some one refinancing sensibly.
1. reduce interest rate when the interest rates are falling - like in the year 2003
2. Cash out - for other investments
3. reduce monthly payments (potentially extending the payment period)
4. consolidate multiple debts - reduce management hassles
5. Reduce the risk of variable interest to fixed one (especially when the interests are low or when the interest rates are likely to increase)
Some times folks refinance a lower interest into higher and I have known this happen - when folks want to cash out or consolidate other higher interest loans (credit card debts). Also, for cashing out already invested amount or the increase in equity.

How about cutting the middle man in this industry?
When I bought my home 2 years back, I used to tell few of my friends on the possibility of getting their investments to pay for my mortgage loans. Well, I was not too serious and I did not go too far. Incidentally one of my friend complained how little he got for his investment and now he got to pay tones of interest for the borrowing.
Is it possible to match make lenders and loan seekers for tiny winy cut? Can the small lenders get a dip in to the loan seekers market? What's the government rules to help such transactions? Can we do this through eBay like service? When Visa can issue currency like denominations world wide why can't this be a reality? How to protect small investors through ‘insurance’ like process? Can we buy government insurance? Would insurance companies/government be interested in helping out? I know it is too much hassle for these agencies to check out the lending habits of these small lenders. Also, the lenders will have to follow government regulation like equal opportunity. Well eBay and visa over come these regulations… why can the lending/loan be done with no/minimal intervention?

Today, I noticed that the hay seeds are are popping. You can hear one per 3-4 seconds. Noticed one or 2 butterflies.
There were more dogs today.
The horse dunk stinks, left over is not pretty to look at and also the flies around. How to manage horses dunks on trails still helping this kind of visit to the trails?

I have started having this as a regular routine - especially on warm wek ends.
I park my car in the Prospect Road Parking lot. Right on Cora Older Trail, Right on Seven Springs trail, left at the immediate intersection, Left on hay field trail, Rt at intersection, Left on Cayote ridge trail, Next 4 intersection stay on Cayote ridge trail. Now you will cross a gate - take a left - you will reach 4 point intersection, take a left up the hill and you will reach the Nob Hill - the highest point in this path. you can see San Jose, Mountain View, The Bay and the east bay mountain ranges.
Today I noticed couple of trees with ripe red plums around the Nob hill.
I have seen following animals in this area
1. Deer
2. Rabits (small and big in school (group))

I have started having this as a regular routine - especially on warm wek ends.
I park my car in the Prospect Road Parking lot. Right on Cora Older Trail, Right on Seven Springs trail, left at the immediate intersection, Left on hay field trail, Rt at intersection, Left on Cayote ridge trail, Next 4 intersection stay on Cayote ridge trail. Now you will cross a gate - take a left - you will reach 4 point intersection, take a left up the hill and you will reach the Nob Hill - the highest point in this path. you can see San Jose, Mountain View, The Bay and the east bay mountain ranges.
Today I noticed couple of trees with ripe red plums around the Nob hill.
I have seen following animals in this area

magine you love Italian restaurants but you are highly allergic to garlic. To ensure your meal doesn't make you sick, you could carry around a mass spectrometer to detect the particular chemical signature that gives garlic its characteristic odor and flavor. An easier way might be to watch the kitchen prepare your pasta and note what ingredients they use.

Like food lovers, software developers and companies with products that depend on software can get allergies too and must watch the proverbial kitchen to make certain everything turns out just right. For example, improperly incorporating someone else's intellectual property into a development project can make a company and its customers sick.
Copying -- or the incorporation of somebody else's protectable software without a license -- is copyright infringement. It can lead to disruptions in product releases, legal liability, public humiliation and a rash of other problems.
Understandably, everyone who produces software should be concerned that any use and distribution of products that include the code of others is done within the specific license that covers the included code.
Allergic Reaction to the GPL
Many software executives break out in hives at the mere mention of the General Public License. Most likely, this is due to the section of the GPL I call the "restriction on downstream restrictions." This clause sets the GPL apart from other open-source licenses that allow downstream users to license derivations restrictively.
Essentially, the GPL says that you can do whatever you want with the software you licensed under the GPL, except that you cannot add restrictions when you license out the software or a derivation of the software. This causes heartburn as developers want to maintain restrictions on their own code yet still benefit from the open-source code. But the combination of the two often can be considered a derivative work, which requires compliance with the license on the open-source software used.
While many open-source licenses do not have such restrictions, this restriction against downstream restrictions makes the GPL a popular choice among open-source program creators, lest they see their freely contributed code coopted into someone else's expensive program. Like hay fever, we just have to live with it.
Open Source Is No Different
The concerns over open-source inclusions are no different than concerns over incorporating any intellectual property of others into a product. Inclusion of someone else's open-source code without the necessary license is just as harmful as inclusion of someone else's trade secrets.
Granted, usually it is easier to get hold of someone else's open-source code than it is to conduct industrial espionage, and often it can be obtained without any purchasing department oversight. But, however the intellectual property of others is obtained, there has to be a moment where someone says "Hey, here's some code we should include in our code base for our new product."
Training programmers, project managers and code custodians is the key to avoiding improper inclusion of the intellectual property of others. At minimum, someone should document what chunks of code came from where. Everyone involved has to understand that they cannot include code without knowing where it came from and informing the custodian of the code.
Whatever area of the organization is charged with tracking such inclusions -- whether it is the legal department or the project-management department -- someone should be able to produce a list of what was included and the license under which that inclusion was brought in.
Automated Code Detectors
Several vendors currently offer systems or services that can scan a project's code base to detect the use of open-source software. It is likely these systems do more than look for the string "Licensed under the GPL" in the comment fields.
As some of their literature describes, the systems scan for signatures of known open-source programs. This, of course, requires knowledge of most open-source programs and their probable variations. It also requires constant updating as is done with virus signatures.
Such an approach is not nearly as reliable as checking the code at the outset. Code signatures assume that the detector vendors have access to all relevant open-source code. This seems unlikely, given that many code writers who choose the GPL write software programs informally. They don't spend time ensuring that their code propagates to all the popular code repositories.
Meanwhile, back at the Italian restaurant, let's change the scenario slightly. Instead of watching food preparation in your own restaurant that you control, imagine yourself someplace you've never been -- where the unexpected is commonplace and you don't control a thing. Such is the case with licensing code from other developers for inclusion. In such cases, signature checking is probably the only way to detect potentially dangerous inclusions.
If you inherited code, or you are licensing code from a third party that you cannot entirely trust, then go ahead and run the code through a detector. Just remember to rely on it only so far as the detector vendor is willing to guarantee accuracy.
Legal Implications
Legal institutions necessarily trail business and technical developments, and open-source usage is no exception. There are not yet any hard and fast legal rules about what happens when an organization is spotted using someone else's open-source code that is not entirely in compliance with the license for that someone's code.
Even IBM (NYSE: IBM - news) v. SCO is not strictly such a case. So even if it ends up making case law, it might not apply to many situations. Most instances of code inclusion will be attributable to individuals acting without authorization of their employers, either because the employing organization really was unaware and did not authorize the inclusion or because proof is lacking of any involvement.
A sensible organization will quickly extract the improperly used code and replace it, or will seek a license that is consistent with its prior actions. In the long run, it always costs an organization more in terms of management time, hard costs and damage to its reputation than it does simply to operate a tight ship in the first place.
Maybe it's unfair to compare brilliantly creative software code with fantastic pasta, but keeping an eye on the chef is easier than post-construction analysis any day. Like scanning the menu, post-construction scanning of code is likely to lead to a false sense of security if it is overused. There is simply no good substitute for having everyone on the team trained in the proper use of tools and ingredients.
So whether you are allergic to food or the legal ramifications of life as a programmer, make sure you study the license agreement and all the ingredients carefully. Bon appetite.

Software manufacturing, software programs to defeat spam, new business data technology and Web services are all areas of opportunity for entrepreneurs, according to venture capitalists taking part in a panel on creative financing at a recent Wharton Entrepreneurship Conference. And those entrepreneurs who cut costs, sign on angel investors and find other creative ways to finance their startups will be rewarded with more equity in their firms, assuming they become successful.
"You would be amazed how little capital [it requires to get a company going] if you are creative about it," said David Flaschen, an adviser to Flagship Ventures, of Cambridge, Mass., and former chief executive of Donnelley Marketing.
Flaschen advised entrepreneurs seeking venture capital to be willing to accept professional management. "Right from the start, make clear that you value the concept of 'foundership' much more than 'CEOship,'" he suggested. "What you should say is, 'I want to make this company interesting and strong enough that we can hire the most effective chief executive officer.'"
One way to help finance a company in the early stages is to get customers to pay up front, said Flaschen, and, if possible, get vendors to make concessions to help the company's revenue stream. "Even before you go out and raise money, ask 'How can I do this with as little money as possible?'" If an entrepreneur takes less financing, then investors have less control. "The dirty little secret is, it is not a lot of fun to have a VC partner in your business. It is a lot more fun to own a majority stake, or 100%. The more you strive for that, the happier you will be."
Flaschen sees opportunities today in software manufacturing, particularly with the growth of open source software development, and is also interested in the idea of defeating spam by creating unique addresses for each Internet transaction.
Bob Greene, co-founder of New York-based Oncore Capital, likes the potential of new business data technology. Theoretically, everything in manufacturing, "from the loading dock to the front door of Wal-Mart, will be data-enabled. We can't predict how far it is going to go, but it's fascinating."
His biggest obstacle to financing new ventures is price. "I am always looking for a great idea and a large market opportunity with strong leadership and a fair price. The last piece is usually what doesn't intersect. I like a lot of companies, but I can't always negotiate the right entry point." Typically he looks for companies run by the classic entrepreneur. "You have to be half-crazy to be an entrepreneur and do a startup. A great leader is manic and will go to the mat. So I look for those qualities."
He also looks for a leader who is able to articulate the company's vision, and he tries to be open-minded about financing first-time entrepreneurs. "In our industry, investors say they don't want to back a younger person's first business. But everyone starts somewhere. Often creative, groundbreaking ideas come from people who don't know how hard it is." In addition to leadership, he focuses on the basic idea behind a startup. "One of the biggest challenges is finding an idea that hasn't been done five times."
Greene warned that angel investors, a layer of financing that usually comes between friends and family and venture capital, are becoming increasingly sophisticated. "It's not what it used to be. It's getting more organized and more professional." Angel investors can be valuable to a startup because they can offer advice and contacts in addition to early, high-risk capital.
Yet it remains difficult to round these angel investors up. "The process of getting angel money is, in my observation, a little bit like herding cats," he said. "It's a confederation of 12 to 15 wealthy individuals who are doing this somewhere between a hobby and a part-time activity." Angel investors tend to travel frequently and miss meetings, or have trouble following up. "This is a great group to go after, but it can take awhile. You can't go in there and have a half-hour meeting over breakfast and they write you a check. That happened in the bubble phase, but not now. To get eight of them to all write checks requires many, many meetings."
Companies should take on more than one source of funding, he said, adding that he likes to co-invest in new companies with other venture capitalists to provide additional "brain power." "You should try to take a round (of financing) with three venture funds together so that when you hit a problem--and you will hit a problem--you don't have just one decision-maker." He suggested that when building a syndicate of investors, companies should look for venture funds that have worked successfully together in the past. Greene also warned that venture capitalists will be just as involved in a firm they take a 15% stake in as they would with a 50% investment.
Venture investors, for their part, should be careful they don't take on too much equity in a firm, diminishing the founders' incentive to succeed. Greene does not like to leave founders with anything less than 20% to 25% of their companies. His firm has metrics for how much of the firm a recruited chief executive and chief financial officer should retain. "I tell the CEO and the management team, 'If it's not working for you, you're not going to do a good job for me. Slavery is over.'"

Amazed at the tenacity of Jobs, Terrell assured the credit manager if the computers showed up in his stores Jobs would be paid and would have more than enough money to pay for the parts order. The two Steves and their small crew spent day and night building and testing the computers and delivered to Terrell on time to pay his suppliers and have a tidy profit left over for their celebration and next order. Steve Jobs had found a way to finance his soon-to-be multimillion-dollar company without giving away one share of stock or ownership.

Google & Credit reporting Agencies (Collate data & copy/personal right infringement)
Google collates all the worlds data (information) irrespective of their willingness to share with Google. Same way, credit reporting agencies collate all your financial transaction - irrespective of your liking.
With may peoples' identities being stolen and become financial wreck due to the collation process, it is growingly becoming problem. I am sure the government will take some action to protect individuals....
Same way, Google 'takes a local copy' of all trademarks/copyrighted materials that it scans and shares it with the entire world for free. Folks are not really going after Google in large scale as this currently generates more advertisement than any bad thing. I am sure there are going to be some backlashes. The backlash has come already when the "Google Print for Libraries" project is being debated.

Big Box stores
Big box store like Costco and Wal-Mart are blamed for "putting Mom and Pop out of business".
The neighborhoods don't encourage such shops in their back yard due to increased traffic and possibilities of hassles around it. The City administrators like them for the economic drive and the jobs they bring along with them.
Well, I am a member of Costco and I shop often at Wal-Mart. Don't we cont Safeway, JC Penny, Sears, K-Mart, Kohls etc as bog-box stores as well? I shop in all of them as well.

wiki entries - vandal?
I created a wiki entry in wikipedia for a company as 'open source' info. In the next couple of days I notice that the info on the company is editted by some one in the company - perhaps by getting paid for making this entry from the business.
I tried to put back couple of points that are not exactly in favor of the company and the corporate folks would come back and delete my entry. This incident makes me wonder, if we should really make it open for any one to change.... How to free the 'open' from folks who have $$ interests - point of view.
